Reading a stack of notes before a commute can be tedious. NotebookLM’s Audio Overview can turn sources in a notebook into an AI-generated spoken discussion or short brief. The useful trick is to provide a focused source set and tell the tool what the listener needs—not to treat the audio as an authoritative recording.

Create a focused overview

Open or create a notebook, add sources you have permission to use, then find Audio Overview in the Studio panel. Google lists formats including a two-host Deep Dive, a single-speaker Brief, Critique and Debate. You can choose a language, adjust length where supported, and add a prompt specifying the audience or topics to emphasize.

For a product manual, try: “Give a short overview of the setup steps and highlight any warnings.” For study notes: “Explain the three main ideas, define new terms and do not add facts beyond these sources.” A smaller collection of current, relevant documents usually makes a more useful briefing than a dump of unrelated files.

Listen critically

Google cautions that Audio Overviews and their voices are AI-generated and may contain inaccuracies or audio glitches. When a number, deadline, safety instruction or quotation matters, pause the audio and check the source document. Do not use a generated overview as the only record of a meeting or as a substitute for reading an important contract.

The feature and sharing options can differ between personal and work or school accounts, and the mobile app may not support every control. If you share an audio link, check the notebook’s access settings first; a link can expose more than the audio depending on what you make public.

Good workflow: curate sources, ask for a short format tailored to your task, listen for gaps, then verify critical claims in the original material.
