Rereading notes can feel productive while revealing very little about what you remember. NotebookLM can generate flashcards or quizzes from the sources in a notebook, giving you a quick way to test recall and spot gaps. The questions are AI-generated, so review them before relying on the score.
Generate a focused quiz
Open a notebook containing the material you want to study. In the Studio panel, choose Quizzes or Flashcards. Google says you can customize difficulty and add a prompt describing the audience, outline or focus. Try: “Create a medium-difficulty quiz only about the safety warnings in these sources. Include explanations and do not invent details.”
Use a narrow subject rather than uploading a whole semester’s unrelated notes. A focused set makes it easier to identify which source a question came from and check the answer. For flashcards, use the “missed” review option to revisit concepts you did not recall.
Check the answer, not just the score
AI can misunderstand a paragraph, flatten an important exception or write an ambiguous multiple-choice question. Open the cited source for any surprising answer. If the tool produces a wrong card, edit or delete it before studying; memorizing a bad card is worse than missing one.
Do not upload restricted course materials, private company documents or other people’s personal information without permission. Availability and controls may vary by account and device, and Google notes that some generated artifacts have restrictions on download.
Try this loop: generate a short quiz, answer from memory, check the source behind every miss, then ask the tool to make a new set about the specific concepts you still find confusing.
