Windows Storage Sense can quietly free space, but one detail matters before you turn on cleanup: what it does with the Downloads folder is a setting you control. Microsoft says default Storage Sense cleans unnecessary temporary files and can remove Recycle Bin content after a period; Downloads and OneDrive files are not touched unless you configure it that way.

Turn it on and review the cleanup rules

Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage and turn on Storage Sense. Open its settings to choose how often it runs and what it cleans. Read the Downloads and cloud-content options carefully before enabling them: those files may be useful, and automatic cleanup could remove items you meant to keep locally.

Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive, usually C:. Microsoft says other drives have separate storage settings. If you want to reclaim space on another drive, check its storage breakdown instead of expecting Storage Sense to clean every disk.

Keep important files safe

Before changing cleanup rules, move documents you need out of temporary folders and make sure important files have a separate backup. Check the Recycle Bin before emptying it, and review OneDrive availability settings if you use Files On-Demand. Cloud placeholders and downloaded local copies are not the same thing.

Storage Sense can run when the PC is low on space or on a schedule, depending on configuration. You can review the selected rules at any time in Settings. If your system drive is still nearly full, Windows’ storage breakdown can help identify large apps and categories before deleting files manually.

The useful trick is not just switching the feature on; it is checking the cleanup rules first—especially Downloads—so Windows clears what you actually intend to remove.
