When a social app keeps pulling your attention, Android’s Focus mode can pause selected apps and stop their notifications while the mode is on. It is a built-in way to create a quiet work or study block, although the exact menus can vary by phone.

Choose apps before starting

Open Settings, tap Digital Wellbeing, then Focus mode. Select the apps you want to pause. Choose the ones that tend to interrupt you—not every app you might need in an emergency. When Focus mode is active, selected apps cannot be used and will not send notifications.

Start the mode when you need it, or use the schedule option if your phone offers it. A recurring window—such as a regular study session—can make the feature easier to remember. If you cannot find Digital Wellbeing, search Settings for its name; manufacturers relocate controls, and some devices do not offer every option.

Know the difference from an app timer

Focus mode is a temporary pause for a chosen set of apps. An App timer instead limits daily time in an individual app; Google says those timers reset at midnight. Use the option that matches the behavior you want. Focus mode is not a full notification firewall: calls, alarms and apps you did not select can still get through.

Make the setting useful, not brittle

Keep maps, transit, accessibility or work tools available if you rely on them. Test your selection once before scheduling a long block, and make sure essential contacts can still reach you through a channel you have left available. Google notes that settings differ across Android devices, so check your manufacturer’s help if the menu does not match.

Focus mode works best as a small boundary you can actually keep. Start with a short session, notice which apps interrupt you most, then adjust the list.
