A notification disappears with one accidental swipe, and suddenly the delivery update or message preview is gone. On some Android phones, Notification history can help you find recently dismissed alerts and notifications from the last 24 hours.

Find the setting before you need it

Open Settings and look under Notifications for Notification history. You can also search Settings for “notification history,” because manufacturers do not always put the option in the same place. If the setting is present, review it and turn it on if your device requires that before it collects history.

Google says the feature can show snoozed notifications, recently dismissed notifications and a history of the day’s notifications. You can tap an item to manage it, but this is not a permanent archive. The app may expose only the information shown in its alert.

Why you might not see it

Google warns that some devices may not have notification history and that the setting can vary by phone. Android version and manufacturer software matter. If it is missing, check your device maker’s documentation rather than installing a random “notification saver” app that asks to read every alert.

History is a convenience, not a recovery guarantee. If an important alert contains a deadline, open the app itself and confirm the underlying message or order. For sensitive apps, consider whether showing notification content on the lock screen is appropriate for your situation.

One practical move: find this setting now and learn what your phone supports. Then an accidental swipe is less likely to become a frantic search later.
