Hand Someone Your Android? Guest Mode Can Keep Your Personal Apps Apart

When a friend asks to borrow your phone, handing over your unlocked personal profile can expose more than the one app they need. On many Android phones, Guest mode offers a separate temporary profile instead. It is a built-in sharing feature, not a spy-proof lock, and whether it is available depends on the device maker and Android version.

Look for Guest in Android settings

Open Settings and search for Multiple users or Users. On devices that support it, turn on multiple users, then add or switch to a Guest profile. Some phones also show a user switcher in Quick Settings. The exact route differs between Pixel, Samsung and other Android models; if search finds no option, your manufacturer may not provide it.

A guest profile has a separate space for its own apps, account and settings. Your personal apps and data are not simply shown as that guest’s profile. When the guest is finished, switch back to your owner profile and use the device’s guest controls to end or remove the session. Read the on-screen prompt before deleting a guest profile because its data can be erased.

Use it for quick, supervised sharing

Guest mode is useful when someone needs to make a call, use a browser or check a route. Set your screen lock first, and do not leave a guest profile signed into accounts you do not want shared. Some settings, such as connectivity, may still be shared across profiles; behavior can vary by device.

For a child or a regular second user, a separate managed user profile may be more suitable than repeatedly creating guests. For sensitive banking or work data, the safest choice may be not to lend an unlocked device at all.

Bottom line: Guest mode gives you a cleaner boundary for casual lending. It does not protect the phone if you leave it unlocked in your own profile, and it is not available on every Android model.
