Before downloading an extra “phone antivirus” app, check the protection already built into Android. Google Play Protect checks apps from Google Play before download and can also scan apps from other sources. It may warn about, disable or remove an app it identifies as potentially harmful.
Check Play Protect on your device
Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then choose Play Protect. Review the status and use the scan option shown on your phone. Google says Play Protect is on by default and recommends keeping it enabled. Labels and screens can vary with Play Store updates and device software.
Play Protect is not a promise that every app is safe, and it cannot replace careful installation choices. Be skeptical of apps that ask for permissions unrelated to their purpose, particularly if you found them through an unsolicited text, a pop-up or a download link. Prefer the official Play Store listing and check the developer name before installing.
Review permissions after installing
Open Android Settings and review an app’s permissions for camera, microphone, contacts, messages and location. Change access you do not need. Google notes that Play Protect may also reset permissions for some apps you rarely use on supported Android versions.
Keep Android and your apps updated when updates are available. Google’s protection service may need to send app and device information to check for harmful software; review Google’s settings and privacy information if you want to understand how the service works. If a warning appears, read it carefully and follow the recommended removal steps rather than dismissing it reflexively.
Bottom line: Play Protect is a helpful baseline, not a magic shield. Leave it on, install from reputable sources, question surprising permission requests and keep your phone updated.
